Superfly Johnson wielding the Glock

Superfly Johnson is one of the main characters in Daikatana. He is a sidekick of Hiro Miyamoto. He is playable in the GBC version of the game. He is also a sidekick.

He is voiced by Marcus M. Mauldin.

His backstory is not known, leading to speculation that he had led a life or done things he had regretted - which is likely with his high position of power and contact with Kage Mishima.

He had encountered illicit practices, bribing and corruption in his tenure of over 5 years working as head of security.

As of 2455, he is imprisoned in Mishima Fortress for speaking out against the horrible conditions of the prisoners in the fortress. He is found in the Concentration camp by Hiro as he is waiting to be executed and tells him to find a Security Card to release him. Once he does so, Johnson joins Hiro. With the help of Mikiko Ebihara's hologram, he discovers that she is imprisoned in the Level 4 research complex. He then leads Hiro through the Concentration camp, the Blast furnace and the Assemble center to Level 4 where they rescue Mikiko.

Throughout the game, Superfly is the voice of reason, and is also somewhat pessimistic, for example: asking whether King Gharroth even has the power to recharge the Daikatana.

In 1200 BC he was turned to stone by the Medusa in the Parthenon until she was defeated by Hiro. Then he leads the team to the exit, where they meet goddess Athena.

In 560, Musilde called Superfly a "Wolfman". At some later point they have to leave Mikiko to rest in a safe place, being infected by the plague. When they move against Nharre in Nharre's tower, he imprisons him in a pot. There Superfly discovers another pocket dimension where Nharre was storing stuff. Hiro releases him with Nharre's Wand, and Superfly produces one of the shards of the Purifier he found inside, and a Medicine for the plague, with which they cure Mikiko.

In 2030 Superfly decides to lead the team in the Alcatraz lab. The team sneaked into some crates to escape the port, but Superfly's crate was taken to another route and was separated from the team. In any case Superfly managed to hijack a helicopter from the Navy base and found his way to the Heliport right when Hiro and Mikiko were on the top.

Superfly is an available character in multiplayer, and starts with a bonus to Vitality and Power.

Development[]

Writer Christian Divine originally named the character "Superfly Williams", a black Frenchman who took his name from cultural remnants in the apocalyptic future (the 1972 movie Super Fly, and a character from the 1973 movie Enter the Dragon), and he would spend the game searching for his real identity. This characterization was vastly changed after Divine moved to Ion Storm Austin to join the Deus Ex project.

Trivia[]

  • In the PC version, Superfly recognizes Mikiko due to her attractive looks, however, in the GBC version, Superfly does not know who she is, and uses Toshiro Ebihara's hologram to find her.
  • While playing as Superfly in multiplayer, the viewmodel arms will still use Hiro's - despite inconsistent skin color and shape.
